Who is Served by North Star Community Services Adult Day Services?

Adults whose physical or mental impairments limit their ability to function in the community:


(1) At Newel Post in Waterloo  impairments may include senior adults with age-related chronic health impairments (for example - stroke, heart condition, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's); social isolation or impairment, or debilitating chronic illness (such as multiple sclerosis,  ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease)


(2) For individuals with severe physical developmental disabilities, the Advantage Adult Day Care Program or Waverly Center can provide services.
Services:
Adult day services activity program with supervision by trained, caring staff include:
  • Nutritious noon meal & snack
  • Follow-through on doctor/ physical/ speech therapy orders
  • Certified medications administration
  • Socialization; new friends
  • Active and varied programs of designed to appeal to a wide variety of tastes; individual choice always
  • Exercise program; may include walking program, as appropriate
  • Reality orientation, if needed
  • Special outings
  • Recreation
  • Health monitoring
  • Transportation for Newel Post participants living in the Waterloo/ Cedar Falls/ Evansdale/ Elk Run Heights area; also for participants of the Waverly center and Advantage program
When:  Full-time, part-time, and occasional use plans.  Must pre-register for "drop in'"
  Full-day services Monday through Friday.  Extended hours can be arranged.
How:  To most, the fees for adult day services are a bargain.  Funding assistance is also available through various federal, state, and county programs, or through private donations to our Adult Day services Sponsorship Program.  Employed family members should ask their Personnel Office about dependent care reimbursement benefits.  Also, some long-term care insurance policies cover adult day services.
To accommodate caregiving families who want to know more about our services, Newel Post and Waverly Center staff also can visit families at home, if requested, to tell them more about the services, answer questions, and to learn more about what the individual and family want.
